CENTRO CIL II

The Centro CIL II, established in 1997 at the University of Alcalá by an agreement with the German Archaeological Institute, coordinates work on the new edition of yhe volume Hispania of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL II2) and is one of the three seats of redaction. For this purpose,  the bibliographical informations – both in printed and in manuscript form – on ancient Latin inscriptions are sustematically gasthered and recorded in the Fichero Central of the Centro, in which actually are documented mor than 22,000 inscriptions.

These funds are at the disposal of interested scholars.  For consultation please contact:

In the new edition of Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, vol. II: Inscriptiones Hispaniae Latinae (CIL II2), which is coordinated by Armin U. Stylow, there have appeared until now the following parts: Conventus Astigitanus (CIL II2/5; 1998), Cordubensis (CIL II2/7; 1995) and Tarraconensis South (CIL II2/5 fasc. 1; 1995). Economic considerations did not allow us to publish there illustrations of more than a small selection of important or – for a variety of reasons – relevant inscriptions on plates and figures in the text respectively and have obliged us to give the full graphical documentation on microfiches only. Grants of the Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Cultura have enabled us to remedy this drawback. The Web Page offers the entire graphical documentation we have of the inscriptions published in the volumes mentioned. We hope to extend this facility in the near future to the illustrations of  inscriptions from other zones.

In addition to the illustrations, the Web Page provides hyperlinks with the Epigraphical Data Bank of the Academy of Heidelberg (EDH; http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/institute/sonst/adw/edh/), created by Prof. Géza Alföldy, where the corresponding texts of the inscriptions can be consulted, including the lost ones of which we do not possess any graphical documentation.

With grants of the Comunidad de Madrid and the University of Alcalá the Centro CIL II is establishing a repertory of the epigraphical funds of the Comunidad de Madrid, comprehending both ancient Latin inscriptions found within the territory of the Comunidad and those conserved in institutions and collections located there. At the same time, it is compiling a dictionary of important personalities who since the 16th century have been concerned with the archaeology and epigraphy of the Peninsula (with the emphasis on the Comunidad de Madrid and the University of Alcalá), in which their contributions are described. A new apartment is dedicated to the documentary sources, which starts with the epigraphical and archaeological documents contained in the correspondence of F. Fita, which is conserved in the Archivo Provincial Histórico de Toledo de la Compañía de Jesús (APHTCJ) en Alcalá de Henares.
